This research was conducted in order to understand the mode of action of a commercial professional chemical peel with the purpose of treating hyperpigmented and photoaged skin. The in-vitro experiments show that the peel prevents the enzymes behind the degradation of collagen, elastin and producing melanin pigment. It was also found that there is a synergistic effect between trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and lactic acid. 3D human skin equivalents and ex-vivo human biopsy were also used to test a variety of parameters in order to confirm the in-vitro results for collagen and elastin.
