The American Academy of Dermatology lists retinol as essential for treating breakout-prone skin.

retinol: recommended for breakouts

Nighttime use of vitamin A for clear skin

Most people think of retinol as an at-home treatment for aging and discoloration, but it is also effective in improving breakout-prone skin. According to The American Academy of Dermatology, retinol is an essential for treating breakouts due to its ability to fight and prevent them before they start.

Topical use of vitamin A increases cell turnover, which brings fresh skin to the surface. In their prime, our skin cells turnover once every 28 days. As we age, our cell turnover rate slows, regenerating and revealing new skin less frequently, resulting in fine lines, wrinkles, a dull and uneven complexion, and breakouts. Skin conditions, such as acne, can also contribute to a slower cell turnover. Retinol boosts cell renewal by encouraging the removal of the outer dead skin cell layer.

One of the causes of breakouts is the blockage of pores, commonly due to dead skin cells combined with oil and bacteria. Naturally sloughing away dead skin cells clears the pore and prevents the clogging that leads to breakouts. For breakout-prone skin types, keeping the dead skin cells exfoliating at a normalized rate promotes clear, unclogged pores. Retinol helps with this process, which is why it is considered essential by dermatologists and skincare experts.

Nightly use of retinol not only reduces the frequency and intensity of breakouts, but also improves and prevents scarring. PCA SKIN®’s Intensive Clarity Treatment®: 0.5% pure retinol night is a pure nighttime retinol specifically formulated to improve breakout-prone skin. When used with the other products in The Acne Control Regimen, this retinol has proven to help clear breakouts, reduce the appearance of scars and improve the overall health and appearance of the skin.
