“It’s about taking the time and energy to truly take care of yourself…"
A Conversation with Serein Wu of ‘Dress Yourself Happy'
See how skincare inspired Serein to live her best life
What sparked your passion in skincare?
My mom instilled in me at a very young age to take care of my skin. She never wore foundation or concealer, so I learned to always cleanse, tone, hydrate, and use an eye cream along with SPF everyday. There was a ritual to my skincare routine and I enjoyed taking the few minutes to take care of my skin each morning and night. I was worried about acne and blackheads in high school, so I found an esthetician nearby and started seeing her every month. I really have her to thank for teaching me a lot about skincare and I saw her religiously through college. Because I saw the results of taking care of my skin, I continued to try the newest products and treatments. It was always a work in progress and I enjoyed the challenge.
How did you get started in the beauty industry?
My blog originally started in 2011 and was called Dress Yourself Happy. It was an online journal for me to express all I was feeling during my engagement to my now-husband. Through the years, I’ve used it as a brain dump, private and personal, never imagining anyone would actually read it. I didn’t even know blogging was a thing.
Many things have changed over the last seven years, and this blog has been not only a therapeutic space in which I could be myself but also a way to track how much I’ve grown since.
In 2014, on a complete whim, I started a YouTube Channel. While the blog (and I) has evolved through the years, it’s always been about motivating my readers to take care of themselves. My content has always focused on self-care because beauty to me means more than makeup and skincare; it’s about taking the time and energy to truly take care of yourself on all levels: physical, emotional, and mental.
How has the beauty industry affected your life personally?
The beauty industry saved my life. I know it sounds dramatic, but when I rediscovered my passion for beauty and found the online beauty community I was at a pretty low point in life. The community gave me an escape and reminded me to dress myself happy. Self-care is not selfish, it's a necessity, especially with the amount of stress we all deal with on a daily basis. We need to work on who we are on the inside, but we can't forget the power of how we feel by looking our best on the outside. You look good, you'll feel good and vice versa.
Why did you choose to work with PCA SKIN and create a starter kit?
I love PCA Skin, because the brand focuses on efficacy and education. Combining nature and proven science to help their clients get the best skin possible as an individual. The products in this kit were chosen to help boost any skincare routine or give a newbie a good place to start. The kit includes some of my favorites from PCA Skin.
